Land was a three-time All-State selection in North Carolina and state Player of the Year in 2003, a four-time all-conference pick, the 2003 conference player of the year and a two-year team captain for the Riverside Pirates. Land never missed a single game in four years of high school baseball. He was a 13th round draft pick in 2003 out of high school by the Pittsburgh Pirates but he chose to attend Wake Forest University as a two-way player. After Tommy John surgery on his throwing arm, Land transferred to the University of Arkansas where he starred for two seasons out of the bullpen and was a 2-time SEC Academic All-Conference selection. After playing in the Cape Cod League for the Brewster Whitecaps in 2007, Land was drafted in the 28th round and signed with the Oakland A’s. He pitched 12 scoreless innings for the Vancouver Canadians before a shoulder injury ended his career.
