Name: Koen Moreno
High School: Panther Creek
Years with Dirtbags: 4
College Commitment: East Carolina University
You’re entering your fourth year with the Dirtbags. What’s one thing you have learned from your first year to now?
I’ve learned that you should never be complacent. It’s key to always work hard in the off-season and during the season whether it’s in the weight room or on the field. If you don’t continue to work then people will pass you.
Take us through the first three years of playing with the Dirtbags and how each year was different?
When I started out with the Dirtbags in 7th grade I was a catcher, then I played middle infield 8th grade, then freshman year I started pitching and that’s when I found my strength.
What’s one area of your game you have grown since last year?
My command on the mound on all three of my pitches. I’ve really worked this offseason on being able to locate my changeup and slider.
What does wearing the Dirtbag uniform mean to you?
To me it means that you’re representing one of the best programs in the country and every game you have to play at full speed without stepping off the gas.
What one game sticks out to you while playing with the Dirtbags?
Playing against San Diego Show to go to the elite 8 in the WWBA National Championship last summer. I pitched 6 innings and we won 1-0.
Best memory while playing with the Dirtbags?
First time wearing camo pants. We kept getting crazy looks by everyone and I loved it.
Committed to East Carolina, what made you choose East Carolina?
I choose ECU because of the coaches, atmosphere, and academics. Coach Godwin, Coach Roszel, and Coach Palumbo all made a huge impression on me and creates a culture that I want to be a part of. The atmosphere at games is electric with all of the fans that show up and it makes it a lot more fun to play in games when the crowd is involved. The academics at ECU are a great fit for me because they have the programs that I am interested in pursuing.
You still have two years left with the Dirtbags, what are you looking to accomplish?
I want to keep winning big tournaments and be a part of a championship team down in Jupiter.
What do most people not know about Koen Moreno?
Most people don’t know that I am a multi-sport athlete. Along with baseball I also play basketball and run track. I competed at freshman outdoor nationals in the 400 meter sprint.
